Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Happy 4th of July. I have a Dream Speech!

July 4th, 2010

Parker picks his own personal hero to speak and present on in front of a live audience. After doing his own research, he decides it has to be, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. He studies about his life, and tells everyone some “interesting” facts about his amazing hero. Parker even memorizes and presents at the end of his talk a portion of Dr. King’s infamous “I have a Dream” speech. Here is my little hero speaking out about his BIG hero. Here’s Parker’s first big speaking engagement! May I present…. Parker!!

I must say, as Parker’s mom, this was an amazing project that Parker worked on. It brought up really deep conversations about discrimination, prejudice, human rights, and on and on. Parker really took it on deeply. He grappled with at the injustice and the unfairness.

The one thing as a mother I see is how innocent and shocked our little ones are to “learn” of the ways humans have treated one another throughout history. I watched my son’s face contort as we read biography after biography and he had trouble comprehending how anyone could not be treated the same as another based on something as silly as the color of skin. It seemed ludicrous to him. And he’s right. It is insanity.

This opened up a lesson for me to discuss with him about ignorance and the danger of judging. It is what we don’t understand that we often judge. Fear. Fear is the opposite of Love. We must constantly ask ourselves if we are coming from a place of fear or love.

Children are wise, aren’t they. I am reminded of “Come unto me as little children.” Mmmmmm….. I can see why. We adults have a lot of learning to do, don’t we?

This 4th of July Parker and I celebrate not only our own freedom but the freedom of all beings. That love, the most powerful force on the planet second only to forgiveness, would reign in the hearts of men, women and children.

Oh that we parents whether we be black, white, blue, red, purple, yellow, indigo, rainbow, would reflect through our own behavior, speech and conduct a character so strong and steeped in integrity that would reflect back and show (not tell) our children that they are loved just as all people equally are. That ALL are children of God to be honored, cherished, respected and accepted just as they are. That the miracle of life is indeed a gift, and that we are the vehicle through which that most precious gift does flow. LOVE.

Happy 4th of July from Parker and I. May your house be blessed, your hearts overflowing with Love and that joy unspeakable be ever present as the peace that passes all understanding warms and courses through you veins all the days of your life. Blessings upon you all. Shanti Shanti Shanti!! Amen and amen. So be it. Namaste. Free at last, free at last!!! Thank God Almighty! Free at Last!!!

Love and blessings,
Tamara and Parker
